Welcome to the Young Lawyers Division

With approximately 2,000 members, the Young Lawyers Division prides itself as being one of the most active organizations within the Bar. We encourage you to join one of our committees and participate in the numerous events we sponsor throughout the year. A list of the committees and the contact information for the officers and committee chairs is available by clicking the "Officers & Committees" link above. A schedule of Young Lawyers Division activities can be found by clicking the "Calendar" link above. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any member of the Young Lawyers Division leadership.

Who is a member of the Young Lawyers Division?

All members of the Utah State Bar in good standing under 36 years of age as well as members who have been admitted to their first state bar for less than five years, regardless of age, are automatically members of the Young Lawyers Division. Membership terminates automatically at the adjournment of the annual convention of the Utah State Bar following a member’s thirty-sixth birthday or the third anniversary of a member’s first state bar admission. There is no need to sign-up or pay dues to be a member of the Young Lawyers Division.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Cinderella Project – Donations Needed.

Date:                March 26
Location:          Your Law Firm or the Utah Law & Justice Center, 645 South 200 East, Salt Lake City, Utah.

The YLD and the Women Lawyers of Utah are collecting gently used and new formal wear and accessories on behalf of low income high school girls in the Salt Lake valley so that they can attend their high school prom.  All of these items are being donated by members of the YLD, WLU and attorneys and staff at Utah law firms and courts.  Red Hanger has also donated services to dry clean the donated items.  Ultimately, the program seeks not only to boost self-esteem and provide positive role models for young women who have succeeded in the face of overwhelming adversity, but also works to remove social barriers and promote inclusiveness and diversity in the community.

Please look through your closets, attic, and other storage areas for gently used or new formal wear or accessories that you would be willing to donate to the Cinderella Boutique.  If you don’t have these items, maybe you have friends that would be willing to donate.  Together, we can make sure that these girls who may not have otherwise been able to attend their high school prom will arrive at the prom in style!  We will be collecting donations through March 26, professionally cleaning all of the dresses, and holding a “Cinderella Boutique” at Jordan High School on March 30th.  Please bring your donations to your law firm representative or contact Angelina Tsu at angelina.tsu@zionsbancorp.com.

New Lawyers Survivor’s Guide CLE Seminar.

Date:                April 9
Time:               12:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Location:          Utah Law & Justice Center, 645 South 200 East, Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Utah State Bar and the YLD are teaming up to provide new lawyers with the information that they need to practice law in a changing economy – successfully starting a solo law practice, getting and keeping your first client, interviewing tips and secrets, advice from seasoned lawyers, and other information to help you succeed.  Additional information will be announced shortly.

Service Project Utah Food Bank

The Utah Young Lawyers Division (YLD) will be sorting food for the Utah Food Bank on Thursday, April 1, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. We would love to have you join us for this volunteer opportunity. We would like all volunteers to bring at least one can of non-perishable food to donate when they come.

The Food Bank is located at 3150 S. 900 West, Salt Lake City, Utah 84119. Volunteers should enter through the West Entrance. Significant others and families are welcome to attend this event. However, all volunteers must be at least 12 years of age. Also, open-toed shoes, flip flops, and sandals are not allowed since we will be volunteering in the warehouse.
