Utah Attorney license renewal and management information.

The window for online license renewal for Active, Inactive, and Current status licensees  is customarily open annually beginning the first or second week in June and runs through August 31st. A late fee will be assessed if renewal is not complete and payment received by July 31st. Suspension and a reinstatement fee will apply if renewal is not complete and payment received by August 31st.

A license renewal email will be sent the first week of June to the email address of record. Renewal may only be completed online using your Practice Portal Account.

A: To request inactive status, please complete and return the request form.
Admission to the Utah State Bar does not include admission to practice in the federal court in Utah. The United States District Court for the District of Utah requires a separate admission application and fee. Please see the federal court’s website for admission requirements, applications, procedures, and fees at: www.utd.uscourts.gov/attorney-admissions.

An inactive licensee may become active upon request and by paying the licensing fees which would have been payable July 1st had the licensee then been active. Please email licensing@utahbar.org for required form and payment information.

A lawyer whose license has been suspended for failing to pay any required fees for three (3) years or less may be reinstated by paying the licensing fees at the Inactive Status rate for each of the years suspended plus the current year’s licensing fee, the Client Security Fund assessment, and a $200 reinstatement fee. Please email licensing@utahbar.org for required form and payment information.

A lawyer whose license has been suspended for failing to pay any required fees for three (3) years or more must file an application for admission to the Utah State Bar. Please email admissions@utahbar.org for additional information.

A lawyer may request resignation without discipline pending if the lawyer is not currently suspended from the practice of law or, there are no outstanding or pending disciplinary matters. Please email licensing@utahbar.org to request the official resignation letter for signature.

A lawyer who resigned without discipline pending who wishes to be readmitted must file an application for admission to the Utah State Bar. See Rule 14-717. Please email admissions@utahbar.org for additional information.

License Types

Active

$425 + Client Security Fund

A lawyer who is engaged in the practice of law must be licensed on Active Status. The practice of law is the “representation of the interests of another person by informing, counseling, advising, assisting, advocating for or drafting documents for that person through application of the law and associated legal principles to that person’s facts and circumstances.”

Inactive

$150 Full-Service / $105 No Service

A lawyer on Inactive Status may be considered to be in good standing but may not practice law in the state of Utah. Full-service option includes a subscription to the Utah Bar Journal.

Paralegal Practitioner

$200 + Client Security Fund Assessment
Licensed Paralegal Practitioners may engage in the limited practice of law in the area or areas in which the LPP is licensed.

$75
A License Paralegal Practitioner who is no longer practicing law may elect to place their license on Inactive Status. Annual fee is required to maintain Inactive Status.

Active Under 3

$250 + Client Security Fund

A lawyer on Active Status who has not been admitted to practice for more than three years in any jurisdiction qualifies for a reduced fee.

Inactive Emeritus

Inactive Emeritus attorneys are not required to pay the licensing fee.
A lawyer who has been a member of the Bar for 50 years or is 75 years old as of July 1 of the current year and who wishes to be on Inactive Status.

Active Emeritus

Active Emeritus attorneys are not required to pay the licensing fee or the Fund for Client Protection assessment.
A lawyer who has been a member of the Bar for 50 years or is 75 years old as of July 1 of the current year AND who is currently engaged in the practice of law.

House Counsel

$425
House Counsel on active status shall limit the practice of law including legal representation to the business of the employer.

$105
House Counsel not currently practicing may transfer to inactive status.
